Project for Technology Development of Steam-spot Detection and Sustainable Resource Use for Large Enhancement of Geothermal Power Generation in Indonesia, Beneficial and Advanced Geothermal Use System (BAGUS)
Project for Technology Development of Steam-spot Detection and Sustainable Resource Use for Large Enhancement of Geothermal Power Generation in Indonesia, Beneficial and Advanced Geothermal Use System (BAGUS) is a joint research project between ITB and Kyoto University under the Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) program aiming at:
Accurately specifying spots suitable for power generation and promoting use of geothermal resources
Indonesia is a volcanic country with one of the world’s greatest potentials for geothermal power generation. From criteria of power output and temporal stability, geothermal is the most promising renewable energy, and Indonesia plans to greatly increase its geothermal power output. This increase necessarily involves many deep drilling operations in order to identify spots suitable for geothermal power generation, which requires a tremendous expense. This project aims to reduce the initial costs and raise the identification success rate by integrating several methods that do not require deep drilling, such as satellite remote sensing and geomorphological analysis. The outcome is expected to promote the use of geothermal resources.
*Remote sensing: A method of obtaining data by remotely photographing or measuring the Earth’s surface using sensors on board satellites or aircraft.
Promoting use of geothermal resources and reducing dependency on fossil fuels
Utilization of geothermal resources is expected to increase dramatically if the initial costs of geothermal power generation are reduced. The technology developed by this project will be applicable to countries located in volcanic zones and will potentially lead such countries to shift their main electric power source from fossil fuels to geothermal energy. As a result, the project will contribute to low-carbon and sustainable society development.
The ESDB Group has developed a five-year roadmap for the period 2016-2020. The main program in 2016 is the development of research topics that are relevant to the trend of industrial needs, especially on a national scale and generally on an international scale. The development of research topics that have been carried out in 2016 are the characterization of oil shale deposits, characterization of coal deposits to support underground coal gasification, development of geothermal exploration technology, and quantification of deposit models with geostatistics.
The main program according to the KK-ESDB research roadmap for 2016 is the development of integrated research topics that include genetic models of mineral deposits, organic matter deposits, groundwater, and geothermal with an emphasis on managing the discovery of new and renewable forms of conventional and non-conventional energy sources.
To achieve the objectives of the main program, several main activities were carried out in 2016 which included the development of research topics in the fields of minerals, geostatistics, unconventional energy (oil shale), coal characterization for underground coal gasification, and geothermal.
Some of these main activities include research that is a continuation of previous research as well as ongoing research that is currently in the research proposal submission stage, among others:
1. Fossil Energy Exploration Field:
- Characterization of oil shale deposits for their development potential as non-conventional energy resources (research is already underway and the results have been published this year). Some of the results of this research are also in the planning stage for publication in the coming years.
- Karakterisasi endapan batubara untuk mendukung underground coal gasification yang merupakan pengembangan topik berdasarkan trend diversifikasi pemanfaatan batubara (proposal penelitian sudah diajukan dan sudah disetujui oleh DIKTI untuk pendanaan tahun 2017 sebesar Rp 100 juta.
- Characterization of coal deposits to support underground coal gasification, which is a topic development based on the trend of coal utilization diversification (a research proposal has been submitted and approved by DIKTI for funding in 2017 amounting to IDR 100 million.
- Characterization of coal deposits to support its use as coke, where currently coal deposits with the appropriate FSI (CSN) for coke have been found in Central Kalimantan, but there is no genetic characterization and composition of the organic material of the coal.
- Characterization of coal deposits to predict the occurrence of coal balls in various Indonesian coals. Coal balls have now become the focus of several mining companies because they are a significant obstacle that disrupts mining operations, processing, or reduces their quality.
2. Field of Exploration and Evaluation of Mineral Materials
Along with the rapid demand for mineral and energy resources, it demands the discovery of new mineral deposits. It is hoped that the sediment genetic model will be able to provide guidance in increasing the success of exploration programs. The accuracy of reserve estimation and evaluation is a challenge in itself to decide on the feasibility of exploiting minerals and becomes an input for economic valuation of minerals. Exploration activities for minerals are expected to be able to answer statements regarding “what, where, form, and how” of the existence of minerals and their implications for the environment that will arise later. This encourages the creation of research collaboration networks between KK-ESDB members or across KK members in new frontier researches. The research focus in this field is as follows
- Development of mining exploration technology that is suitable for tropical areas and rugged morphology and more accurate mineral evaluation technology.
- Research evaluating mineral resources and reserves.
- Geostatistical application research and reserve quantification
3. Geotechnology for Exploration
Technological advances in the field of earth and mineral exploration are one of the important keys to the success of the mineral exploration program. Application development, method development and technology combinations will produce solutions to earth problems that are cheaper, more effective and more efficient. It is hoped that the development of geotechnology applications will also accelerate the discovery of new mineral and energy resources. To answer the challenges above, the development of geotechnology applications for exploration prepares software and hardware that supports exploration activities in the field. The combination of the application of geophysical, geochemical, remote sensing and geographic information systems methods will make geological interpretation more accurate and easier for the public to use/read. The research focus in this field is as follows:
- Development of field research technology for appropriate geotechnical techniques, both directly and indirectly, to support mining technology during exploration.
- Research on the application of geophysics and geochemistry for exploration of minerals and the environment.
- Research on remote sensing applications for exploration of minerals and energy resources, especially applications relevant to tropical regions.
4. Groundwater, Geothermal and Environmental Resources Sectors
In the future, the need for energy, minerals and water will increase rapidly. Research challenges are faced to be able to answer the problem of rapidly increasing human needs for natural resources, increasing progress of civilization and improving the environment. At the same time, the threat of decreasing the quantity and quality of groundwater will become an important concern where environmental changes occur due to exploitation of earth’s resources. In the present and future, in meeting energy and mineral needs to support the progress of civilization, deep open pit mining, underground mining development, coal bed methane and geothermal production are not only faced with technological problems alone, but are faced with solutions to address internal groundwater problems. such exploitation as well as the influence of exploitation on the environment and the balance of groundwater resources and efforts to restore them. To answer the challenges above, science and technology in the field of hydrogeological and hydrogeochemical engineering in the KK-ESDB will be able to contribute to research and scientific development for the search for groundwater resources, the application of hydrogeology for the exploration and exploitation of energy and mineral resources by considering environmental aspects. Groundwater, geothermal and environmental resources research groups can carry out research collaborations (new frontier research) with other research groups with fellow KK members or across KK.
Research Focus:
- Research on groundwater, water resources and technology for exploration and exploitation of groundwater resources.
- Quantitative hydrogeological and hydrogeochemical research for applications in the fields of mining, geothermal and environmental science.
- Developing hydrogeological technology to support non-conventional energy resource exploitation and mineral exploitation activities.
- Developing hydrogeological knowledge in underground construction.
In the following stages or years, the research topics that have been and are being developed as described above will continue to be deepened in collaboration with various institutions on both a national and international scale. The next stage in 2017-2020 will be collaboration with various national and international institutions to deepen research topics. These institutions include research, educational, government and especially industry institutions so that the research results can later be applied practically in industry. Henceforth, in the mid to late five year period (2018-2020), collaboration will be carried out with various institutions for applications in the industrial sector.

The Earth Resources Exploration Expertise Group (ESDB), Faculty of Mining and Petroleum Engineering, Bandung Institute of Technology, is an expertise group that covers the Earth Resources Exploration Expertise Field, especially in exploration: minerals and coal, groundwater, geothermal, and components of the earth’s environment.
In lecture activities, the Earth Resources Exploration KK supports the educational process in several study programs, namely the Mining Engineering Undergraduate Study Program, Metallurgical Engineering Undergraduate Study Program, Mining Engineering Masters Study Program, Geothermal Masters Study Program, and Mining Engineering Doctoral Study Program, all at the Faculty of Mining and Petroleum Engineering, and also the Master’s Study Program in Groundwater Engineering at the Faculty of Earth Science and Technology.
In the field of research, the Earth Resources Exploration Group carries out research activities in the fields of: mineral exploration, coal, groundwater, geothermal, printing and estimating mineral and coal resources and reserves, as well as mining environmental analysis.
Meanwhile, in community service activities, together with other KK, the Earth Resources Exploration KK carries out many mineral and coal work/exploration surveys, printing and estimating mineral/coal resources and reserves, mining planning, mining feasibility studies, and mining AMDAL. Apart from that, it also provides courses/training to the community and those involved in mining activities.
Currently, the Earth Resources Exploration Group is collaborating with Kyoto University, Japan, in developing geothermal exploration methods, namely in determining the position of geothermal reservoirs using various methods, from the use of satellite/sensory imagery, volcanic/magmatic gas emissions, geochemistry, hydrogeochemistry, hydrogeology , geothermometers, to reservoir modeling, as well as environmental monitoring due to PLTP operations. This collaboration took place from 2015 to 2020, funded by the Japanese government through JICA and JST. In this collaboration there is also assistance/grants for the necessary equipment, namely in the form of tools: Field Spectrometer, Radon Measurement System, Mercury Measurement System, GC Thermal Conductivity, X-Ray Diffraction, X-Ray Fluorescence, Scanning Electron Microscope, Ion Chromatography, Stable Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry, ICPM Spectrometry, Water Isotope Analysis, GC-electron Detector, and 3 Software (Satellite Image Processing, InSAR, Reservoir Simulation).

Project for Technology Development of Steam-spot Detection and Sustainable Resource Use for Large Enhancement of Geothermal Power Generation in Indonesia, Beneficial and Advanced Geothermal Use System (BAGUS)
Project for Technology Development of Steam-spot Detection and Sustainable Resource Use for Large Enhancement of Geothermal Power Generation in Indonesia, Beneficial and Advanced Geothermal Use System (BAGUS) is a joint research project between ITB and Kyoto University under the Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) program aiming at:
Accurately specifying spots suitable for power generation and promoting use of geothermal resources
Indonesia is a volcanic country with one of the world’s greatest potentials for geothermal power generation. From criteria of power output and temporal stability, geothermal is the most promising renewable energy, and Indonesia plans to greatly increase its geothermal power output. This increase necessarily involves many deep drilling operations in order to identify spots suitable for geothermal power generation, which requires a tremendous expense. This project aims to reduce the initial costs and raise the identification success rate by integrating several methods that do not require deep drilling, such as satellite remote sensing and geomorphological analysis. The outcome is expected to promote the use of geothermal resources.
*Remote sensing: A method of obtaining data by remotely photographing or measuring the Earth’s surface using sensors on board satellites or aircraft.
Promoting use of geothermal resources and reducing dependency on fossil fuels
Utilization of geothermal resources is expected to increase dramatically if the initial costs of geothermal power generation are reduced. The technology developed by this project will be applicable to countries located in volcanic zones and will potentially lead such countries to shift their main electric power source from fossil fuels to geothermal energy. As a result, the project will contribute to low-carbon and sustainable society development.
KK ESDB telah menyusun roadmap lima tahunan untuk periode 2016-2020. Program utama pada tahun 2016 adalah pengembangan topik-topik penelitian yang relevan dengan trend kebutuhan industri khususnya skala nasional dan umumnya skala internasional. Pengembangan topik penelitian yang telah dilakukan pada tahun 2016 adalah karakterisasi endapan oil shale, karakterisasi endapan batubara untuk mendukung underground coal gasification, pengembangan teknologi eksplorasi panasbumi, serta kuantifikasi model endapan dengan geostatistik.
Program utama sesuai roadmap bidang penelitian KK-ESDB untuk tahun 2016 adalah pengembangan topik penelitian terpadu yang mencakup genetik model endapan mineral, endapan bahan organik, airtanah, dan geotermal yang ditekankan pada pengelolaan penemuan bentuk-bentuk sumber energi konvensional maupun non-konvensional dan baru serta terbarukan.
Untuk mencapai tujuan dari program utama tersebut telah dilaksanakan beberapa kegiatan utama pada tahun 2016 yang mencakup pengembangan topik penelitian di bidang mineral, geostatistik, energi non-konvensional (oil shale), karakterisasi batubara untuk underground coal gasification, dan geotermal.
Beberapa kegiatan utama tersebut mencakup riset yang merupakan kelanjutan riset sebelumnya maupun yang sedang atau akan berjalan yang saat ini sedang dalam tahap pengajuan proposal riset di antaranya:
1. Bidang Eksplorasi Energi Fosil:
- Karakterisasi endapan oil shale untuk potensi pengembangannya sebagai sumberdaya energi non-konvensional (penelitian sudah berjalan dan hasilnya sudah dipublikasikan pada tahun ini). Beberapa hasil riset ini juga sedang dalam tahap perencanaan publikasi pada tahun-tahun mendatang.
- Karakterisasi endapan batubara untuk mendukung underground coal gasification yang merupakan pengembangan topik berdasarkan trend diversifikasi pemanfaatan batubara (proposal penelitian sudah diajukan dan sudah disetujui oleh DIKTI untuk pendanaan tahun 2017 sebesar Rp 100 juta.
- Karakterisasi endapan batubara untuk mendukung pemanfaatannya sebagai kokas dimana saat ini telah ditemukan endapan batubara dengan FSI (CSN) yang tepat untuk kokas di Kalimantan Tengah namun belum ada karakterisasi genetik dan komposisi bahan organik batubaranya.
- Karakterisasi endapan batubara untuk memprediksi keterjadian coal ball di berbagai batubara Indonesia. Coal ball saat ini telah menjadi fokus di beberapa perusahaan tambang karena menjadi hambatan yang signifikan yang mengganggu operasional penambangan, pengolahan, maupun menurunkan kualitasnya.
2. Bidang Eksplorasi dan Evaluasi Bahan Galian
Seiring dengan pesatnya kebutuhan mineral dan sumberdaya energi menuntut penemuan endapan bahan galian baru. Model genetik endapan diharapkan mampu menjadi petunjuk dalam peningkatan keberhasilan program eksplorasi. Keakuratan estimasi dan evaluasi cadangan menjadi tantangan tersendiri untuk memutuskan kelayakan suatu pengusahaan bahan galian dan menjadi masukan valuasi ekonomi mineral. Kegiatan eksplorasi bahan galian diharapkan dapat menjawab pernyataan mengenai “apa, dimana, berupa, dan bagaimana” keberadaan bahan galian serta implikasinya terhadap lingkungan yang akan timbul kemudian. Hal ini mendorong terciptanya jaringan kerjasama penelitian sesama anggota KK-ESDB ataupun lintas KK dalam batas baru penelitian (new frontier researches). Fokus riset bidang ini sebagai berikut
- Pengembangan teknologi eksplorasi tambang yang sesuai dengan daerah tropis dan morfologi terjal dan teknologi evaluasi bahan galian yang lebih akurat.
- Penelitian evaluasi sumberdaya dan cadangan bahan galian.
- Penelitian aplikasi geostatistik dan kuantifikasi cadangan
3. Bidang Geoteknologi untuk Eksplorasi
Kemajuan teknologi dalam bidang kebumian dan eksplorasi bahan galian merupakan salah satu kunci penting keberhasilan program eksplorasi bahan galian. Pengembangan aplikasi, pengembangan metode, dan kombinasi teknologi akan menghasilkan suatu pemecahan masalah kebumian dengan lebih murah, efektif, dan tepat guna. Pengembangan aplikasi geoteknologi diharapkan juga akan mendorong percepatan penemuan sumberdaya mineral dan energi baru. Untuk menjawab tantangan di atas maka pengembangan aplikasi geoteknologi untuk eksplorasi menyiapkan perangkat lunak dan keras yang mendukung kegiatan eksplorasi di lapangan. Kombinasi aplikasi metode geofisika, geokimia, penginderaan jauh, dan sistem informasi geografis akan menjadi interpretasi geologi menjadi lebih akurat dan mudah digunakan/dibaca oleh masyarakat. Fokus riset bidang ini sebagai berikut:
- Pengembangan teknologi penelitian lapangan untuk geoteknik yang tepat guna baik langsung maupun tidak langsung untuk mendukung teknologi pertambangan pada saat eksplorasi.
- Penelitian aplikasi geofisika dna geokimia untuk eksplorasi bahan galian dan lingkungan.
- Penelitian aplikasi penginderaan jauh untuk eksplorasi mineral dan sumberdaya energi khususnya aplikasi yang sesua dengan daerah tropis.
4. Bidang Sumberdaya Airtanah, Geotermal, dan Lingkungan
Di masa akan datang kebutuhan energi, mineral dan air akan semakin pesat. Tantangan penelitian dihadapkan untuk mampu menjawab masalah kebutuhan manusia akan sumberdaya alam yang meningkat pesat, peningkatan kemajuan peradaban dan perbaikan lingkungan. Pada saat yang bersamaan, ancaman penurunan kuantitas dan kualitas airtanah akan menjadi perhatian penting dimana terjadi perubahan lingkungan akibat eksploitasi sumberdaya bumi. Di masa kini dan akan datang, dalam memenuhi kebutuhan energi dan mineral untuk menunjang kemajuan peradaban, deep open pit mining, pengembangan tambang bawah tanah, produksi coal bed methane dan geotermal tidak hanya dihadapkan pada masalah teknologi semata, tetapi dihadapkan pada solusi menangani masalah airtanah dalam eksploitasi tersebut serta pengaruh eksploitasi terhadap lingkungan dan keseimbangan sumberdaya airtanah dan upaya pemulihannya. Untuk menjawab tantangan di atas maka ilmu dan teknologi dalam bidang rekayasa hidrogeologi dan hidrogeokimia dalam KK-ESDB akan mampu memberi sumbangan penelitian dan pengembangan ilmu untuk pencarian sumberdaya airtanah, penerapan hidrogeologi untuk eksplorasi dan eksploitasi sumberdaya energi dan mineral dengan mempertimbangkan aspek lingkungan. Kelompok penelitian sumberdaya airtanah, geotermal dan lingkungan dapat melakukan kolaborasi riset (new frontier research) dengan kelompok penelitian lain dengan sesama anggota KK atau lintas KK.
Fokus Riset:
- Penelitian mengenai airtanah, sumberdaya air dan teknologi eksplorasi dan eksploitasi sumberdaya airtanah.
- Penelitian hidrogeologi kuantitatif dan hidrogeokimia untuk aplikasi dalam bidang ilmu pertambangan, panas bumi, dan lingkungan.
- Mengembangkan teknologi hidrogeologi untuk penunjang kegiatan eksploitasi sumberdaya energi non konvensional dan eksploitasi mineral.
- Mengembangkan keilmuan hidrogeologi dalam konstruksi bawah tanah (underground construction).
Pada tahap atau tahun-tahun berikutnya topik penelitian yang sudah dan sedang dikembangkan sebagaimana dijelaskan di atas akan terus dilakukan pendalaman dengan bekerjasama dengan berbagai institusi baik skala nasional maupun internasional. Tahap berikutnya pada tahun 2017-2020 akan dilakukan kerjasama dengan berbagai institusi nasional maupun internasional untuk pendalaman topik riset. Institusi tersebut mencakup institusi penelitian, pendidikan, pemerintah dan terutama industri agar hasil-hasil penelitiannya nanti dapat diaplikasikan secara praktis di industri. Untuk selanjutnya pada pertengahan hingga akhir periode lima tahunan (2018-2020) akan dilakukan kerjasama dengan berbagai institusi untuk aplikasi di bidang industri.

Kelompok Keahlian Eksplorasi Sumberdaya Bumi (ESDB), Fakultas Teknik Pertambangan dan Perminyakan, Institut Teknologi Bandung, merupakan kelompok keahlian yang mencakup Bidang Keahlian Eksplorasi Sumberdaya Bumi, terutama dalam eksplorasi: mineral dan batubara, airtanah, panasbumi, dan komponen lingkungan kebumian.
Dalam kegiatan perkuliahan, KK Eksplorasi Sumberdaya Bumi menunjang proses pendidikan pada beberapa Program Studi, yaitu Prodi S1 Teknik Pertambangan, Prodi S1 Teknik Metalurgi, Prodi S2 Rekayasa Pertambangan, Prodi S2 Panasbumi, dan Prodi S3 Rekayasa Pertambangan, semuanya pada Fakultas Teknik Pertambangan dan Perminyakan, dan juga Prodi S2 Teknik Airtanah pada Fakultas Ilmu dan Teknologi Kebumian.
Dalam bidang penelitian, KK Eksplorasi Sumberdaya Bumi melaksanakan kegiatan penelitian dalam bidang: eksplorasi mineral, batubara, airtanah, panasbumi, pemodelan dan estimasi sumberdaya dan cadangan mineral dan batubara, serta analisis lingkungan pertambangan.
Sedangkan dalam kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat, bersama sama KK yang lain, KK Eksplorasi Sumberdaya Bumi banyak melakukan pekerjaan survey/eksplorasi mineral dan batubara, pemodelan dan estimasi sumberdaya dan cadangan mineral/batubara, perencanaan tambang, studi kelayakan pertambangan, maupun AMDAL pertambangan. Selain itu juga memberikan kursus/pelatihan kepada masyarakat dan para pelaku kegiatan pertambangan.
Pada saat ini KK Eksplorasi Sumberdaya Bumi sedang mempunyai kerjasama dengan Universitas Kyoto, Jepang, dalam pengembangan metoda eksplorasi panasbumi, yaitu dalam menentukan posisi reservoir panasbumi dengan berbagai metoda, dari penggunaan citra satelit/indraja, emisi gas volkanik/magmatik, geokimia, hidrogeokimia, hidrogeologi, geotermometer, sampai pemodelan reservoir, serta pemantauan lingkungan akibat operasi PLTP. Kerjasama tersebut berlangsung dari tahun 2015 sampai 2020, didanai oleh pemerintah Jepang melalui JICA dan JST. Dalam kerjasama tersebut juga ada bantuan/hibah peralatan yang diperlukan, yaitu berupa alat-alat: Field Spectrometer, Radon Measurement System, Mercury Measurement System, GC Thermal Conductivity, X-ray Diffraction, X-ray Fluorescence,, Scanning Electron Microscope, Ion Chromatograph, Stable Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry, ICPM Spectrometry, Water Isoptope Analysis, GC-electron Detector, serta 3 Software (Satelite Image Processing, InSAR, Reservoir Simulation).
